Cat Grooming FAQ — Tempe, AZ
Answers to the most common questions about cat grooming at Tempe Cat Grooming, inside Fancy Pets Grooming.
Do you groom cats exclusively?+
Yes — we are 100% cat-only. Unlike most grooming salons that primarily serve dogs, every tool, product, and technique we use is feline-specific. This means a quieter, calmer environment with no barking dogs to stress your cat.
How much does cat grooming cost in Tempe?+
Our prices range from $15 for a basic nail trim to $140 for our premium Cat Spa Package. A full groom package (bath, blowout, brush-out, nail trim, ear cleaning, sanitary trim, and finish cut) is $65–95 depending on coat condition and breed. View our complete pricing at /pricing.
How often should my cat be professionally groomed?+
It depends on breed and coat type: long-haired cats (Persians, Maine Coons) every 4–6 weeks; medium-haired cats (Ragdolls, Birmans) every 6–8 weeks; short-haired cats every 8–12 weeks; hairless cats (Sphynx) every 1–2 weeks for bathing. Senior and overweight cats benefit from more frequent grooming.
Do you sedate cats for grooming?+
No — sedation should only be performed by a licensed veterinarian. We use behavioral techniques, pheromone diffusers (Feliway), quiet equipment, and patience. If your cat requires sedation for grooming, we recommend coordinating with your vet.
My cat is very anxious. Can you still groom them?+
We specialize in anxious and difficult cats — it's one of the benefits of being cat-only. We offer our Anxious Cat Grooming service with extended appointment times, minimal restraint, and a cat-paced approach. We've successfully groomed cats that other Tempe groomers have turned away. If your cat truly cannot tolerate grooming, we'll be honest and discuss alternatives.
What vaccines does my cat need for grooming?+
We require proof of current rabies vaccination for all cats. We also strongly recommend the FVRCP (distemper) vaccine. Kittens must have their first round of vaccinations (8+ weeks). If your cat has a medical exemption, please discuss with us before booking.
How long does a grooming appointment take?+
Most appointments range from 30–90 minutes depending on the service. A full groom package is typically 60–90 minutes. Express grooming (essentials only) is under 30 minutes. We'll give you an accurate estimate when you book based on your cat's breed, coat condition, and temperament.
Can I stay with my cat during grooming?+
We generally recommend drop-off and pick-up. Cats often feed off their owner's anxiety, and your presence can actually increase stress. However, we're happy to discuss accommodations for extremely anxious cats. You're always welcome to tour our facility before your first appointment.
Do you offer mobile cat grooming in Tempe?+
Currently, all grooming is performed at our salon inside Fancy Pets Grooming at 3310 S McClintock Dr, Tempe, AZ 85282. We're exploring mobile options for the future — follow us on social media for updates.
What's the difference between a lion cut and a full groom?+
A lion cut shaves the body short (leaving fur on the head, mane, lower legs, and tail tip) — ideal for long-haired cats in summer or cats with matting issues. A full groom includes bath, blowout, brush-out, nail trim, ear cleaning, sanitary trim, and a breed-appropriate finish cut (typically not a full body shave). The right choice depends on your cat's coat condition and your preference.
How do I prepare my cat for a grooming appointment?+
No food for 2 hours before the appointment (reduces car sickness and stress vomiting). Bring your cat in a secure carrier — top-loading carriers are best. Let us know about any health conditions, medications, or behavioral concerns when you book. Don't bathe or brush aggressively right before — we'll handle everything.
What payment methods do you accept?+
We accept cash, all major credit/debit cards, and contactless payment (Apple Pay, Google Pay). Payment is due at pick-up. We do not currently accept checks.
Do you groom cats with health conditions?+
Yes, with proper disclosure. Please inform us of any health conditions (arthritis, heart conditions, diabetes, skin issues, etc.) when booking. We'll adapt our techniques accordingly. For cats with serious conditions, we may request vet clearance before grooming.
What's your cancellation policy?+
We require 24 hours notice for cancellations. Late cancellations or no-shows may be subject to a $25 fee. We understand emergencies happen — just call us at (480) 897-7734.
